Other Baldness Patterns

Baldness occurs when the hair follicles are affected during the growth phase or become dysfunctional prematurely. In 95% of the cases, DHT ‘Dihydrotestosterone’ is responsible for the hair loss. The hormone creates an imbalance that goes on to affect the normal functioning of hair follicles. Consequently the hairs lose their virility, become thin and the density is affected. But, not always the hormone or the genetic reasons are responsible for the hair loss.

Traction Alopecia is one of the other baldness pattern that is caused by traction on head strands. The patients who constantly pull and tie the hair to a clutch for a long period of time are the most probable patients of Traction Alopecia. Working women who tie knots on a regular basis run the risk of damaging the hair follicles and dermal papilla. The hair loss shows a particular pattern on the damaged area. In some cases the follicles stop producing hair strands and the hair density is significantly reduced. The patient suffers from patches and hair thinning.

Another baldness pattern is Cicatricial Alopecia. In this type, the hair follicles are badly damaged by an inflammatory process and leave a bald spot on the scalp along with scarring of the skin. This is one of the rare conditions on hair loss and the symptoms are not easy to comprehend. It is advisable to always consult a doctor to diagnose the patho-physiology of the disease and take the right treatment.

Trichotillomania is one psychological state of mind to constantly pull the hair strands until it breaks. The doctors identify this as an obsessive compulsive disorder arising out of patient’s behaviour. Of the total patients that suffer from hair loss, 4% have this tendency to pull hair and break them. They would pull hairs out of eyebrows, forehead and eyelashes. The patients show an uneven hair lining or small patches on the affected areas. The personality also shows traits of depression, anxiety and restlessness.

Patterns on hair loss are therefore dependent on different factors. Sometimes it is the DHT that causes the hormonal imbalance and sometimes it is because of the nutritional deficiency, traction and obsessive compulsive disorder. Hair transplantation comes across as the right remedial solution to make sure that the hair loss doesn’t affect your appearance any longer.
