PRP (PLATELET RICH PLASMA)
What is PRP- Platelet Rich Plasma?
Off late there is a lot of talk about a revolutionary means of treatment that is completely non- surgical and goes by the name PRP. The word PRP actually stands for Platelet Rich Plasma and forms the basis of a truly revolutionary form of treatment for patients suffering from hair loss. This is a very innovative method of treatment which has brought hope for many. Platelets release the granules which contain growth factors which stimulate the inflammatory cascade and healing process. Blood typically contains 6% platelets whereas PRP has a significantly increased supra-physiological platelet concentration. These special Platelet cells promote healing; accelerate the rate and degree of tissue healing and regeneration, response of the body to injury, and formation of new cellular growth. The primary purpose of using PRP in hair restoration is to stimulate inactive or newly implanted hair follicles into an active growth phase.
PRP – NON SURGICAL TREATMENT
PRP is not meant to replace current FDA approved therapies such as DHT blockers and Minoxidil but it is a promising non-surgical therapeutic option for those patients with hair loss.
Advantages: The highpoint of this is that very few visits to the doctor is required and generally within a six month period two to three injections are given and that is all there is to it. There are no regular follow up visits to your doctor as the injections prove their benefits quite remarkably within a month of the injection being given. Besides hair growth, PRP therapy has proven to be beneficial in skin complaints, aging issues, etc. It is practically a treatment for all age groups and everyone.
PRP – NON SURGICAL TREATMENT
Disadvantages: There are practically no known side effects, except for little discomfort at the time of procedure. Patients are known to respond very fast to this system because there are no foreign bodies being used and it is the patient’s own cells that work the miracles for curing baldness.
Procedure: PRP therapy, which takes approximately 80 minutes to complete, begins with collection of 20 milliliters of the patient’s blood. This blood will then be spun down in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma from the other components of whole blood. The process takes 30 minutes. A local anesthetic is then administered to completely numb the scalp treatment area.
Mechanism: A special micro needling roller device(Dermaroller) is then used to stimulate the dermis of the scalp. This micro needling stimulation causes micro trauma to the dermis that induces various healing and growth repair cells into action. Doctors then inject the concentrated platelets into the site of the injury. Platelets function as a natural reservoir for growth factors that are essential to repair injured tissues.
During the process of hair restoration, PRP is injected into the scalp of the patient. PRP stimulates the follicular progenitor cells or adult stem cells for both female and male pattern hair loss. This technique causes the growth of miniature hair follicles into healthier, bigger and stronger hair growth. In addition, this process has also been proved highly beneficial in growing hair in eyebrow hypotrichosis, alopecia area and other cases of non-hereditary hair loss.
Results: The healing from PRP treatment is typically uneventful. He or she can experience some mild forehead swelling for 4-6 hours after PRP injections. Patient can resume his or her routine activities immediately after the procedure . Besides these effects, no other noticeable impacts are found. Patient can easily wash his or her hair immediately after the injections.
New hair growth is experienced in 2 months, but usually between 5-8 months that will keep on improving up to a year after the procedure.
In short, PRP treatment promises to be the best alternative for people, who cannot go for surgery. Moreover, its highly beneficial results of natural hair growth make it also ideal for those surgical patients, who want it as a complimentary hair restoration process with either STRIP or FUE procedure.
